PREVIEW: 2019-2020 CLARKSTOWN NORTH RAMS
Coaches: Tony Mellino ( 28th season), Scott Murphy ( 8th season), Brian Winrow ( 7th season), Tony Mellino SR (54th season)
2018-2019 Sectional Finish: 14th
2018-2019 Season: Following the 2016-2017 season which saw the RAMS go 15-5, the 2017-2018 RAMS fielded a relatively inexperienced team with a few open weights yet still managed to finish with a respectable 8-11 record. Individually, the RAMS had 1 Rockland County Champion (who was also the MOW and received the award for the Most Pins) along with 2 other finalists, 2 Division Champions along with 2 other finalists, and had 3 wrestlers place in the top 4 in the Section I Tournament with one wrestler earning a Wild Card to compete at the New York State Championships. These three All-Section RAMS also peaked at just the right time in the post-season with all three exceeding their seeds.
Biggest Losses to Graduation: Team captain Alexis Diaz (39-5) won 5 individual tournaments becoming a 2X Rockland County Champion and the MOW, a 2X Division Champion, a Section I finalist, and a NYS Wild Card, and Otto Davidson (31-7) who won two individual tournaments, was a finalist in the Rockland County and Divisions, was All-Section and selected by his teammates as that year’s MVP, will be impossible to replace. Their hard work, discipline, leadership, and knack for scoring bonus points will sorely be missed.
Top Returning Wrestlers: The RAMS will return a trio of accomplished wrestlers looking to improve on very successful seasons last year. Senior Ryan Stern, who is now a 4X All-Section wrestler, was 34-9 and had a great season winning two individual tournaments, took 2nd in both the Rockland County and the Division tournament, and although injured still went on to finish in 4th place in the Sections. Ryan is poised to complete his career as North’s All-Time Win leader (currently at 142 career wins), Career Matches wrestled (currently at 212 matches wrested), and could potentially become only the 2nd to have 100 career pins (currently has 72). Senior Jack Henry had a solid year, going 25-16, capturing his second Divisional title, and came up just one match short of placing in the Section I tournament. And junior George Rurak is looking to continue his upward trajectory to become All-Section after going 29-13 with 22 pins, finishing in the top 3 in four individual tournaments, and also coming up just one match short of placing in the Sections in only his second year of wrestling.
Strength of Your Lineup: We will have a real mixed bag this season with 4-5 very experienced wrestlers, a few others with some varsity experience, and the rest who are quite young and who will be getting their real first taste at the grind of a varsity high school schedule. Like last year, we will have a nice balance as both a dual meet and tournament team but this year, in looking at this year’s potential squad, I believe we will be tougher as a tournament team due to our ability to push 3-4 wrestlers into the finals of most tournaments we enter with another 3-4 with the potential to finish in the top 4. We will have a nice mix of returning veterans with experience and others who will certainly turn some heads this season as they get their feet wet in their first varsity season and others who have improved greatly after last season’s first time on varsity. What has truly impressed our coaching staff is the quality of the wresters we have in the room who are working so hard and who will see great success on both varsity and junior varsity. This is one of the deepest rooms we have had in a while so we are excited by the prospects of bringing home a ton of hardware this season.
Holes to Fill: For the first time in a number of years, we actually have 3 wrestlers who will compete in the 275 pound weight class yet for the first ever we may have a hole at 99 pounds which is strange for us at North. Beyond that, we expect to fill every weight class with competitive athletes which should lead to a successful and rewarding season as many lay the groundwork for the future while others cap off a great career.
Theme for the Season: On the back of our shirts is a phrase spoken by Spartan women to the Spartan men going off to war: “Come back with your shield or on it.”This speaks to the mentality of a RAMS wrestler who must go out with every intention of winning their match but if not, to go down fighting so their opponent feels relieved rather than joy in getting the victory. This is also summed up on one of the sleeves where the phrase “6 or 6” is printed: get us six for the pin or else go the full 6 minutes without giving up the pin. This theme will be emphasized and repeated day-in and day-out until it becomes second nature. If that can be accomplished, the season will be a success.
